These weekend posts, a glimpse behind the scenes as I write a new novel or three, are for paid subscribers. If you are a paid subscriber - thank you! I appreciate it. If not, I would love it if you would consider upgrading. It costs just over £1 a week (less if you go for an annual subscription!)
If you would like a paid sub but can’t afford one, email me and I’ll sort you out.
Took my coffee to the beach this morning. We move in a week, so I’m making the most of being so close.
Along with packing up my entire life (the boys are doing their own packing - one is done, the other is yet to start), I’ve finally got back to keeping a diary for each day’s writing. It definitely helps me. Not only because it keeps me honest, but also it helps to just have that little moment of reflection after every writing session.
MONDAY
Yesterday, I wrote some notes and organised the draft so far and made a plan for the week. And I felt good about it. Okay, maybe not good. But better than I had been feeling.
This morning, I took myself off to my office. Did a bit of sorting ready for moving. Then sat down and got on with writing. I didn’t do as much as I wanted to, but I did some so I’m taking that as a win.

TUESDAY
Hauled myself to my office and started writing without much enthusiasm. But when I’d finished, I wandered off to do something and had a moment of disorientation: wasn’t I just… having dinner in Mallorca? No, I was not. But my characters were (padron peppers, salmon, a jug of margarita). I shook myself and got on with emptying drawers ready to pack and move.

WEDNESDAY
Not enough words down today, but I have to give myself a bit of a break since so much of my energy is focussed on the house move. My characters are drunk (a couple more than the others) in a Mallorcan nightclub and I no longer go into a room without picking up something to give away, throw away or pack.
Words today: 1024

I’m also making a new home playlist - and a new home reading list - does everyone do this?
