These weekend posts, a glimpse behind the scenes as I write a new novel, are for paid subscribers. If you are a paid subscriber - thank you! I appreciate it. If not, I would love it if you would consider upgrading. It costs just over £1 a week (less if you go for an annual subscription!)

MONDAY

I meant to start by writing 1000 words, because I was planning to jumpstart this book for 1000 words of summer. But on Monday I got a small freelance job that somehow took forever and I finally finished it at minutes past midnight, my hands practically claws and my forearms aching.

So the only thing I did for this book on Monday was start a Spotify playlist.

First song: Changes by Cam, which I think is this book’s theme song:

There is a town, somewhere down a country road
I see it now, I take it everywhere I go
The river sways, I can almost hear it now
As if to say, "You're not the only one who wants a way out"

So, I go
'Cause I don't wanna feel like I don't know you anymore
I memorize those roads

Somewhere out in the big wild country
Someone's fallin' in love in a backseat
Givin' it away
Like their hearts won't ever break
God bless the young hearts sippin' cheap wine
Gettin' drunk with their friends for the first time
Thinkin' nothing's gonna change
'Til everything changes

First day of summer, upside down.

TUESDAY

1000 words is too many words. I haven’t written 1000 words in a day for ages and if I keep telling myself I have to write 1000 words, I won’t write any at all. So instead I tell myself I only need to write 100. I write 37 before deciding I need to google something. And then I come here and write this. I’m not going to google, I’m just going to plough on.

The house smells the same, but there’s something else. Mold or mildew or that weird fishy hot dust smell. (Is that something to do with bad electrics? I think I read that once. Should probably google that.)
