Hi! I’m Keris. I’m an author writing about writing and books and music and life, and the last song I listened to was All About You by McFly on my The Harry Styles Effect playlist.
I’ve been planning to do a June round-up post, but I am knackered and can’t remember what I’ve done in June. Good job I’ve got the internet and photos on my phone.
The month started with a flying visit to London for my publisher’s 10th anniversary party. Harry came with me and we had a lovely time.
Went over to Liverpool to see Harvey Goldsmith being interviewed about Live Aid for the launch of the British Music Experience’s Live Aid exhibition. It was great, but also… it’s the 40th anniversary of Live Aid this year and I am not able.
On possibly the hottest day of the year, Joe and I went to the Liverpool International Tennis Tournament. We went last year and it poured with rain all day, there was no tennis and, at the end of the day, we got our money back. This year, it was sweltering. The full photo gallery hasn’t gone up yet, but in the meantime, this rubbish photo of me and Joe sheltering under a flamingo umbrella made me laugh.
WRITING
Plotting and planning a big rewrite of Dead Frog Lane. I’m excited and daunted in equal measure. And also aware that I’m at the point where I’m putting off the actual writing… going to have to knuckle down soon.
READING
Still reading lots of music books, fiction and non-fiction. I loved Sounds Like Love by Ashley Poston and Our Song by Anna Carey. I’m partway through The Liverbirds, about “Britain’s first female rock’n’roll band” and I adored Miranda Sawyer’s Uncommon People.
WATCHING
Obsessed with the latest series of Taskmaster. Yes, even more than I am usually with any series of Taskmaster. This is one of my favourite line-ups for ages and I know as soon as it ends I’m going to watch the whole lot again.
Also, do you know Stevie Martin has a (hilarious) Substack?
COOKING
A few weeks ago, I suggested to the boys that they might like to cook a meal every now and then. “A real meal,” Joe advised Harry, “not, like, Sonic’s balls.” So I made Sonic’s balls.
MESSY MIDDLE MONEY
I soft launched my money coaching business.

F.O.X.
Still seeing foxes everywhere - three last week on the way back from the cinema.
What did we see at the cinema? I can’t remember… Oh yes, Eyes Wide Shut, which I found quite compelling but also irritating and ultimately pointless. Quite impressed that I managed 26 years without knowing anything about it beyond Tom and Nicole banging.
Despite the world being a terrifying hellscape…
How’s June been for you?
Paid subscriptions help support me and my writing, plus you can read extracts from my work-in-progress, Dead Frog Lane (working title! no frogs were harmed, etc.).
(If you’d like to upgrade, but can’t pay right now, email me and I will add you, no questions asked.)
If you’d prefer not to commit to a subscription to Happy Endings, maybe you’d like to make a quick, one-off, contribution to support me and my writing (and my cat). Thank you!
there's a podcast i love called "what went wrong" that talks about all the things that went wrong during the production (and sometimes after) of a movie. they did an episode about "eyes wide shut" a couple months ago. you should check it out!
I’m loving this Taskmaster series too. Even though I get confused that Nish Kumar has gone Canadian/American EVERY TIME. I didn’t know Stevie Martin before this but she’s great, and I’ve heard her on two podcasts since it started. And thanks for the rec for her substack - subscribed now.
